The `!Java Research License`! (`!JRL`!) is a software distribution `F33f`_`[license`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=License]`_`f created by `F33f`_`[Sun`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Sun_Microsystems]`_`f in an effort to simplify and relax the terms from the "research section" of the `F33f`_`[Sun Community Source License`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Sun_Community_Source_License]`_`f. Sun's `F33f`_`[J2SE`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Java_Platform,_Standard_Edition]`_`f 1.6.0, `*`F33f`_`[Mustang`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Java_(software_platform)]`_`f`*, is licensed under the JRL as well as many projects at Java.net.

The JRL was introduced in 2003 to try to "make things a lot more friendly to people doing academic research" into the Java language,`:cite-ref-1[`F5bf`_`[1`#cite-note-1]`_`f] before the core of Java was made open source in 2006.`:cite-ref-2[`F5bf`_`[2`#cite-note-2]`_`f]

Although the JRL has elements of an open source license, the terms forbid any commercial use and are thus incompatible with both the `F33f`_`[Free Software Definition`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Free_Software_Definition]`_`f and the `F33f`_`[Open Source Definition`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Open_Source_Definition]`_`f. The JRL is a research license to be used for non-commercial academic uses.
